Sticky Drawings
Sticky Drawings series were made duringthe strange days of isolation andquarantine in 2020, with the outsideworld locked down, our domestic worldwas engulfed in the struggle with myson’s Eating Disorder. We experiencedthe sense of isolation accompanyingAnorexia Nervosa, within the isolation ofthe global pandemic.
My son has always collected sticks andtwigs and moved these in his hands tocreate patterns or stories imagined. These ordinary and ever present objectsbecame symbolic of his presence, andthe sticks depicted in these artworks aredrawn from his actual collection.
These works begin as miniature drawingson discarded papers and are then wereprinted at large scale to produce the finalproduct. I use the motif of my son’s manycollected “sticks” to explore our ongoingjourney to recovery, which engenders, resilience, persistence, family unityacross two homes.
Sticks can build a fire, make a shelter, and support a forest canopy. Thedistorted beauty myth of the modern ageurges us to be “stick figure “thin. These“Sticky” drawings contemplate the bigideas in small things. — Gus Clutterbuck, 2023
